Garden Girl:
Original Story by: Kristen Wohlberg from the Roodepoort Northsider.
From the bed to the table
Roodepoort — Most of Monique Theunissen’s friends might
spend their free time hosting tea -parties for their teddy bears
or playing dress-up.
She however, spends her in the garden maintaining her patch
that houses the vegetables that will later feed ten mouths.
This is not just her hobby of the month, it is her passion.
Monique has been interested in gardening from an even
younger age, and she wakes up early every morning to
water her plants before school.
Due to the poor condition of the soil, Monique had to prepare
and doctor her beds before planting, her involvement doesn’t
end there.
She nurtures them from the bed to the table, helping her mom
prepare them for dinner.
The eight-year-old shares her gardening tips and homemade
compost recipe with the Northsider.
......The garden boasts two types of parsley, three
types of lettuce, spinach, spring onions, pumpkin,
leeks, squash, chives, tomatoes and the most
important
plant in the patch — orange and yellow
marigold flowers, which protect her veggies from
goggas.
Her self-delegated responsibilities don’t end
there. She has also committed her time to her
gooseberry bush, cherry tree, avocado tree, grape
vines, peach tree, fig tree, pomegranate tree and
strawberry bush. And in case that is not enough,
she plans on growing carrots, potatoes, beetroot
and turnips. Monique has already designated
spots for them in her full garden......Cont.

West Rand — While most eight year olds are
refusing to eat their vegetables, Monique
Theunissen is growing her own, writes Kristen
Wohlberg.
With the guidance of her ouma, Marie van der
Merwe, Monique has been maintaining her own
vegetable garden. Not only did she plant the
vegetables herself, but she also prepared the soil
with her own homemade compost.
Far from a play-play, dollhouse vegetable garden,
Monique’s vegetables feed 10 mouths and have
contributed to many family meals.
Her sister Storm tells the Northsider that Monique
grows the best spinach.........
